This book sung to my heart, to put it simply. When this book came into my life, I had been really struggling with my manuscript to the point that I had felt like giving up. I picked this up on a whim, and it told me exactly what I needed to hear to pick myself up by the shoe strings and keep going, and I absolutely devoured it.
Anne Lamott reminds us that we are not alone, and that, yes, writing is very hard, and it is perfectly normal to fall on difficult times with our writing. But she also reminds us why we write in the first place, and it’s not for money or fame, but for the love of telling stories, or for sharing our stories.
Her voice shines with a lightness and comedy that is both endearing and inspirational, and I dare say this was one of the most influential books I have read on writing in general. By the end of it, she feels like your best friend, and you want to thank her for taking a moment to sit with you and imparting her thoughts and own experiences.
So if you are a writer, and especially if you have struggled or are currently struggling with writing, give this book a chance, cuz it might just be the pat on the shoulder you need to persevere.
